Barcamp, Microformats, Conor O’Neill

What the hell are microformats? I have no idea but hopefull by the end of this talk I’ll know a bit more. ;)Ok this sounds promising it’s all about adding relevance to your content. So they are easy conventions for marking up data on the web, standards for the web if you will like. The vcard’s we all get on e-mail, with the end goal of having this information ala drag n drop from a webpage to your contact list, calendar, etc.

So maybe the vcard example isn’t the best but if your looking at a concert listing, you’ve just ordered the tickets, and then you open your calendar and re-enter all the data, just think if you could drag n drog that info straight to your calendar…

A great example of a microformat is XFN this tracks relationships between people so if you have a list of delegates at a conference you can use this way to see the “seven degree’s of seperation” and work out very quickly who you need to talk to get an introduction to whoever you want to meet. Jaysus getting to meet the bautiful people has never been so easy :D

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the camera adds 50 lbs. Who is that person in the picture ;-)

Thanks for describing the talk George, it was a bit haphazard as I had not time to prepare but I enjoyed it anyway.

Apologies for the dodgy photography, I keep forgetting to apply the skinny filter :)

Thanks for the talk Conor, I didn’t know it at the start of your talk but I have used a lot of microformats without even knowing it. Next step learn a bit more about them and implement more of them on my site/blog. ;)
