Fernando Alonso, Cheat and World Champion!

posted in Cheat, F1, Fernando Alonso, Flavio Briatore, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Qualifying, Race, Ron Dennis, Schuey, championship, grand prix, mistakes |

I’m disgusted, Fernando Alonso, a two times world Champion, ignored his pit crew and sat in the pit box as Lewis Hamilton waited for a change of tyres and have one last crack at pole position. Fernando delayed Lewis long enough that he wasn’t able to attempt his last flying lap before the qualifying ended and took pole position from Lewis.

Shame on you Fernando, you have often criticised other drivers for tactics such as these and now you do the same! To your own Teammate? of course your counting on Ron Dennis not lodging a formal complaint, as it would compromise the team, your counting on Ron Dennis not feeling the need to ‘change your engine’ or ’start you from the pit lane’ or even firing you. It was obvious from the coverage that this was not planned and approved by the team.

I’m reminded of ‘Rascassegate’ at last years Monaco GP and Flavio Briatore’s comments in particular.

“Someone who was seven times a world champion wants us to believe that he didn’t do it on purpose - it’s fairyland.”

At least there could be some debate over Schumacher’s intentions, but, in my opinion, there can be no denying that Fernando sat still despite being ordered out of the pits by the team.

This all comes right in the middle of the whole Stepneygate affair and I have to say thing’s look bad for McLaren, they were found guilty of cheating, yet not penalised as ‘they gained no benefit’ from the information. I’m sorry, but cheating is cheating and unless some punishment is applied to McLaren even as a token gesture, I believe it calls in to question the impartiality of the FIA and it almost legitimises cheating maybe that’s why Fernando did it.

I’m sure there will be a lot of comment in the next few days/weeks regardless of what the outcome this weekend and in the whole spy thing, at the end of the day, it would be easy to say the only ones losing out are the stakeholders in the sport, as they are making a mockery of what has been an incredibly entertaining season in F1 for all the right reasons.

But I love F1, have done since I were a nipper and I’m a stakeholder in the sport, granted as a spectator only but it’s the spectators that the sponsors want to entice and it’s the sponsors that provide the funds for the teams and drivers to go racing. I’m glad I’m not a vodafone customer because I would now have to change phone companies, I’m glad I don’t drive a Mercedes because I would have to change it.

It’s possible Alonso only went when he was told to (as he suggests) because it’d be very difficult to time the gap without outside help. The mechanics didn’t look too surprised when he didn’t move.
On the other hand there really isn’t room for debate about Schmacher’s actions last year. The telemety proved it.

Nobody believes the FIA to be inpartial, but since Mosley hates Ron so much (and makes no effort to hide it) there’s no way he’d let the team away without punishment unless they really didn’t deserve it.

Yeah Conor, but if you count the signal for Alonso to go as being his lollipop man, then you can see the lollipop being lifted on the ITV coverage just as the camera started to pan in towards Hamilton (the cameraman assuming Alonso would go and switching shots).

And apparently half of the pit wall were waving at him to go. We’ll know when the marshals finish reviewing the radio traffic, if the lollipop was up and the radio traffic was ‘Go, Go!’, then he’s in the wrong.

If he’s in the wrong, then same punishment as Schumi - back of the grid for that race…

Thanks for dropping by Connor, I’ve been reading (and enjoying) your blog since I found it last month. :) What makes me sure that Fernando’s move (or lack of) wasn’t planned was Ron’s reaction, He tried to throw his headset through the pit wall monitors, went directly to Alonso’s trainer and refused to comment to the ITV interviewer.

I’ve been out at the shops since I posted so I’m off to check the F1 news sites and see whats being said ;)

The lollipop is not always the signal to go in practice and qualifying. Regularly drivers will sit and wait until their engineer tells them there’s a gap in traffic. The lollipop just means the pit-crew are finished their work.

Ron says the team told Fred to sit there, and that Lewis tried to screw Alonso out of an extra lap earlier in the session.

(And if it was a punishable offence it wouldn’t be the same as Schumacher’s. He stopped 9 cars setting a lap. Fred stopped one. The punishment for that is usually the loss of the three fastest laps - which would probably put him tenth.)

Right, I’ve read the updates and I just love what Ron says at the end of this article.

“Fernando is here. Have I explained it accurately? [Alonso gives a thumbs-up]. OK. That’s the way it is.”

Why would a team owner ask the driver if he’d got the story straight? Maybe he wasn’t sure of the story himself?

If Alonso was waiting for a gap why didn’t he just roll down the pitlane slowly? Why wipeout your team mates chances?

Now I could be wrong and If I am I’ll retract. Lets see what the Stewards have to say and what the chatter on the team radio’s was all about.

In fernando’s previous pit in Q3, the lollipop man looked to be listening to his radio as he held the flat of his palm toward alonso, then counted him towards leaving with a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 on his fingers.

i’m not buying it, why would it be up to the lollipop man on some occasions and the race engineer on others? radios are notorious for failing in F1, lollipop man should be working IN CONJUNCTION wth the race engineer, not in opposite fashion…

well the FIA have had their say and docked him 5 positions. It did look very suspect and the first impression that he was delaying appears to hold up.

Alonso is a big cheat. I think the whole issue about professional sporting activities can be thrown into a big dustbin nowadays.
They just want our money. They are not honest to the spectators. I am really disappointed about some of the decisions made in a team.
I believe personally, that everyone should have the chance to proof to the whole world what he or
    or she is capable of.
Be it in riding, driving, boxing or what have you.

well he really is a cheat now, no doubt about it, and de la rosa.they both admitted it.

Now Alonso makes Michael Schumacher look like Mother Theresa. So the 0.6 seconds he’s supposed to have brought with him from Renault actually came from Ferrari!
I believe Alonso should be fired or Hamilton given no. 1 status. And de la Rosa, Coughlan and Stepney should be banned from formula 1 for good.
The 4 of them have taken a team with probably the best reputation for fair play and a proper racing ethos and destroyed it. And to make it worse Ferrari were right!

On top of that Renault have admitted having technology stolen from McLaren in their car and nobody is shouting about that.

I agree, Alonso is the biggest cheat in the business. He should be thrown out of F1 for his
unethical behavior. Lewis is in his first year of F1 and has maintained a clean reputation
and deserves to win the championship. I cannot believe Ron Dennis has not fired Alonso. If I was in McLaren right now, I would short fill him on his final pit stop and let him run out of fuel a couple of laps before the end of the race. Alonso tried to blackmail McLaren because he wants to be fired and get out of his contract
as he does not like the Lewis competition, Alonso is a joke, he is not a professional racing driver,
he is a cheat and a waste of space.

Alonso cheats, De La Rosa cheats, and Alonso is still allowed the chance to become “World Champion”. Where is the justice in that?

alonso cheat!!! you can say that again, This spygate affair its clear to me it was the spaniard who was receiving and responsable for the use of this information. Why he had immunity i can only imagine the powers that be (the fia)are also dirty

It’s not fair to blame Alonso, the team had ordered Lewis to come in first and he didn’t turn up. This could have led to some confusion, which was visible. Now talking about the punishment given to Alonso and Mclarens well you don’t have to be Mr. Einstein to know how fair Formula 1 is.
