Barcamp Dublin kicks off tomorrow morning with registrations at 9.15am, in The Digital Exchange on Crane street. My previous Barcamp visits (Cork & Waterford) were eye opening affairs. There is so much going on in Irish Tech circles that I would never have heard about, blogs I wouldn’t have discovered and people I would not have met if it were not for Barcamp, if you have any interest in the Technology sector Barcamp is a great way to explore it. So be there or be a shape with 4 equal lenght sides and 90 degree corners
If your looking for more info and how to sign up, check out the Barcamp Dublin Wiki and Blog

Well Elly’s presentation just ended and despite getting the award for longest overrun of the day, I thought it was faboulous, yea I’m biased but no one left for the whole thing (that I noticed anyway) and there was a large round of applause. So congratulations sweetie.
For those that weren’t here I will be uploading a movie to youtube once I work out how to do that, I’ll place a link here once I have done that. I wasn’t the only one recording it either, Donncha was using his macbook to record as well. So I’ll link to his as well once it’s available.
A large part of Elly’s presentation was to do with a particular blog and Audiocast this one. Elly will also be posting her presentation later so I will link that as well.
Once again, congratulations sweetie
*update* You tube didn’t like the length of the video so Elly uploaded to blipTV instead.
the movie below starts the presentation and Dooncha’s recording (see link above) follows on from where I ran out of memory on my camera
(sounds like an excuse for bigger memory cards :D)

What the hell are microformats? I have no idea but hopefull by the end of this talk I’ll know a bit more. ;)Ok this sounds promising it’s all about adding relevance to your content. So they are easy conventions for marking up data on the web, standards for the web if you will like. The vcard’s we all get on e-mail, with the end goal of having this information ala drag n drop from a webpage to your contact list, calendar, etc.
So maybe the vcard example isn’t the best but if your looking at a concert listing, you’ve just ordered the tickets, and then you open your calendar and re-enter all the data, just think if you could drag n drog that info straight to your calendar…
A great example of a microformat is XFN this tracks relationships between people so if you have a list of delegates at a conference you can use this way to see the “seven degree’s of seperation” and work out very quickly who you need to talk to get an introduction to whoever you want to meet. Jaysus getting to meet the bautiful people has never been so easy

So we drove to Cork this afternoon, yup Lucan to Cork on a friday afternoon, the journey can be best described as sauntering, we got checked into our hotel and headed out to try and meet up with a few people although we hadn’t let anyone know we would be about.
So it was about 8pm when we left the hotel. We walked around Cork from MacCurtain st. to “The thirsty Scholar” but no luck meeting any other campers. Ah well, I got to wander around Cork for the first time in over 20 years that I wasn’t there on business and I have to say there was a fantastic “vibe” about the city, maybe it was all the students on the street or the smell of fresh pizza dough in the air but it reminded me of the electricity that was in the air in the Temple bar of the late eighties and early nineties, before it was “improved”
On the way back to the hotel I snapped the picture above with the compact camera. I’m stunned that it even picked up the light but not as stunned as how steady my hand was for a long exposure, especially considering I have had one or two
I can’t wait to get out around this fantastic city with the 5200, I saw some gorgeous pictures just waiting to be taken.

My Sweetie decided that she wanted to go to BarCamp as she has made many attempts to design her own website and I think the current look and feel she is working on, is fantastic, if somewhat light on content ;). Keep in mind she is not a web designer by trade, before passing judgement.
So, we are using this as an excuse to have a weekend away together in the “other Capital”
I will have to remember that I’m there in a social capacity and not a business one, everybody needs a break from time to time, you know
As I was looking through the list of attendee’s and speakers I noticed a few familiar names, so it will be a chance to get to know them.
My Sweetie got me interested in blogging and probobly leads the most web-centric lifestyle of any person I know. Her job is managing a web-based Doc-control system, the team of people she works with are based in numerous different timezones. She “talks” daily to her friends and mum over MSN (who my sweetie introduced to personel PC’s and the web. Her mum is now an active member in some online communities, runs her own Wiki and not so long ago installed her own broadband. She gives us both tips regularly now) also gives her mum remote assistence for troubleshooting those annoying issue’s we all have
her current web project is getting our photo collection geo-tagged and online, so that we can both use it for our own blog’s and so that we can share these images with our families and friends. Almost all our shopping with the exception of food and impulse items is purchased online, every holiday we have taken together has been booked online. All our maps, newspapers and lots of our entertainment are virtual, both on and offline.
I’m blaming her for a lot in the last paragraph
but in truth these are the things that we do together. I’m looking forward to this, it’s not often we get to “geek out” in public, so this should be fun and interesting for us both.
